On September 1, 2012, Stanley was found in the Highlands area by a friend of my daughter. No one claimed him after fliers were posted so we brought him to our house. Our local doctor performed a wellness check and Stanley became a part of our family. On December 13, 2012 Stanley was hit by a vehicle resulting in a fractured left femur. Having funds available, we spared no expense and took him immediately to Metropolitan Animal Hospital. Surgery was done by a specialist with plates, rod and screws placed. On December 27, 2012 our surgeon determined that one of the screws in the upper plate was loose and he was taken back to surgery for repair. Neutering was also done at that time. Again, sparing no expense to keep Stanley comfortable was our primary focus. We assumed Stanley would be back to normal in no time!
On March 3, 2013, while being boarded at the local vet office, he self mutilated two middle toes of left hind foot. While cost was quickly becoming an issue, we knew we had to give our boy a chance. So, the next day, repair was done to his foot in an attempt to save pad. On March 18, Xrays showed that his original injury, the broken femur, was healing well. The bandages were removed from his foot. The next day, Stanley chewed off the outer toe of the same foot he had self-mutilated prior. The surgeon recommended amputation to eliminate his ability to continue this horrific behavior.
During this three month period, our family spent upwards of 28% of our net income to save Stanley. It's not that we wouldn't have spent more, but there was truly nothing left. Thankfully, a friend found Brown Dog Foundation and upon completion of their application process, Stanley's leg was amputated and rather than being forced to euthanize him, we were able to save his life. As you can see from the photo, his human sister, Hannah, is thrilled that he is still with us. As am I.
